{"id":2298,"date":"2019-06-10T18:43:25","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T13:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pitch.link\/blog\/?p=2298"},"modified":"2019-06-29T18:48:29","modified_gmt":"2019-06-29T13:18:29","slug":"where-is-your-strategic-plan-and-bmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitch.link\/blog\/where-is-your-strategic-plan-and-bmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Where is your strategic plan and BMC?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Earlier this month&nbsp;<strong>David Cummings<\/strong>&nbsp;raised this question in his blog&nbsp;<strong>On Startups<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;<em>Why the lack of a Strategic plan?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Why indeed?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was meeting with&nbsp;<strong>Rahul Gupta<\/strong>, a prolific angel investor in New Delhi and he echoed very similar thoughts. Why is it that founders are not able to articulate their priorities in a simple&nbsp;<em>5 quarterly targets<\/em>&nbsp;format? Many a times, according to Rahul, the fact that there is no-one outside the team to whom the team\/founder is accountable, makes the difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Why is it that rolling out a OKR system is so rare despite of clear value it delivers (ask Google). It is true that measuring everything may lead to data deluge, and since we got the ability to track and measure data in all its form, we were focused on collecting copious amounts without the slightest idea of how we will use it. But that is another story.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Cummings wants to see a one page strategic plan before he meets with a Founder. It looks something like this :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One line purpose<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Core Values<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>General \u2013 fit on one line<\/li><li>People \u2013 fit on one line<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Market<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One line description of your market<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brand Promise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One line brand promise<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elevator Pitch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>No more than three sentences for the elevator pitch<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3 Year Target<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One line with the&nbsp;goal<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Annual Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>3-5&nbsp;annual goals in table format with&nbsp;the start value, current value, and target value<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quarterly Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>3-5&nbsp;quarterly goals in table format with the&nbsp;start value, current value, and target value<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quarterly Priority Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Three one-line priority projects with&nbsp;the percent complete for each<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He also prefers SMART goals &#8211; as in :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Specific<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 target a specific area for improvement.<\/li><li><strong>Measurable<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.<\/li><li><strong>Assignable<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 specify who will do it.<\/li><li><strong>Realistic<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.<\/li><li><strong>Time-related<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 specify when the result(s) can be achieved.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Variation for A could be Achievable and for R &#8211; Relevant.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few weeks back I undertook a BMC course conducted by the&nbsp;<strong>MaRS Discovery District,<\/strong><em>Toronto<\/em>&nbsp;(here is a shout out to&nbsp;<strong>David Bowden<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Tannya Cai&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211;&nbsp;<em>Thank you for running an excellent program<\/em>)&nbsp;and found it to be incredibly useful. A Business Model Canvas, built through customer interaction and feedback and associated reserach provides incredible focus and validation to a ventures direction and clarity.
