Arguably one key attributes of a successful leader – political or otherwise is the ability of listening. Not just hearing but listening with a open mind with limited bias filters applied to our auditory function.
With the increasingly distracted and divided attention spans we are all battling, this particular function is more at risk and under internal attack. It is causing ineffective meetings, mis understandings, lack of ability to recall simple details and thus low productivity in the workplace. If you are in a sales function you can understand the impact of not listening on both sides of the table.
Is there a way out of this maze? Well this article by Stephanie Vozza for Fast Company on the book ‘The Samurai Listener’, by Cash Nickerson shows a way out. It is called : ARE YOU PRESENT?
An acronym for Awareness, Reception, Engagement, Understanding, Persistence, Resolution, Emotions, Senses, Ego, Nerve and Tempo.
This is a 4 min read and can help you reprioritize and manage your fragmented attention. Give it a shot. Better still – read the book.
