What is it you ask? Well Benjamin Hardy has written a long-read piece on that. He defines the Culture Wall as an intention “to create an environment that continually reminds me one of what I stand for and what I aspire toward……they create a shared vision, set of beliefs, expectations and direction for desired behavior.”
According to Hardy, to make progress and deliver transformational outcomes for yourself you need to be intentional about your own values and beliefs. Very few proactively design their environment. Hardy quotes Dr. Marshall Goldsmith which neatly sums up his views – “ if you do not create and control your environment, your environment creates and controls you.”
He lists 20 attributes that he applies. Some seem totally logical (and you would have heard them from many other). Some super moralistic (Gandhi / Martin Luther Kid Jr type, but makes sense). And some out of thin air. Sample these :
- Do what is right let the consequence follow
- Creativity Banishes Recurring Thoughts – This one is very interesting – Hardy quotes a National Science Foundation article that showed that an average person has between 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts a day. Of these 80% are negative and 95% are exactly the same repetitive thoughts as the day before. If you get things done, remove recurring thoughts, you open yourself up for new opportunities.
- 100% is easier than 98% – This is about giving in. If you do it once, there is nothing stopping you from doing it again. “Decide what you stand for. And then stand for it all the time.” — Clayton Christensen
- Success precedes Confidence– “ Confidence is the thing entrepreneurs need to protect more than anything else.” Dan Sullivan.
It is a wonderful thought provoking article. Allows for a lot of reflection. While thinking of yourself and your values and culture – give it a read. It will help open your mind to possibilities.
