Apparently in a lot of places. FastCompany recently released their top 50 innovative companies list. These companies were chosen from a list of 410 nominated across 41 categories and countries. The list includes the obvious suspects like Square, Twitch, Shopify, Alibaba, Grab (Singapore, 1bn revenue, Ride hailing + Food delivery+ Finance) and, well, Apple!
A sample of the spread –
Truepic – using image authentication to combat deep fakes and disinformation, Apeel – plant based coating to preserve freshness of vegetables, Peloton – live streaming fitness classes ( who watches you ask? Folks paying them $700mn a year), AnchorFree – Hotspot Shield VPN, Oatly – milk alternative from pulverized oats, Lanza tech – turning carbon emissions into fuel using a first of its kind bio reactor filled with microbes that eat waste gases and produce ethanol – 16 million gallons a year. There are a bunch working on Health tech to Beauty to crops capable of surviving climate change. They are reimagining libraries, banks (dah!) , higher ed, Rocket launches.
The surprise entry – Mozilla Foundation. What wasn’t a surprise was why? For quarantining Facebook.
