Getting press and coverage, and in turn building links back to your site is a big challenge startups face. While you are busy building, validating your product, trying to get the first 10 paying customers you are following Paul Graham’s advice and doing things that don’t scale. Add to this for tactical measures as many of them will provide a big pay back.
Rand Fishkin in his latest “Moz Whiteboard Fridays” outlines a simple 4 step process that needs nothing but “brains and Google search” to accomplish and deliver great results. The core idea is to list the attributes of your business like background of your founders, types of financing you have, type of company, geography / sector etc. and then identify companies that share these attributes. For PitchLink it could be “SatesTech companies in Toronto” and then search for publications, sites and people who have written or covered these companies. Reach out to those folks and let them know of your existence. Multiple combination as well as using tools within Moz or other similar products can help you identify sites that link back to these companies and would most likely link back to yours.
