Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped down from their executive roles at Alphabet the parent company of Google. Like their now legendary letter to prospective shareholders in their S-1 filing in 2004, this one is worth a read for all founders.
“We’ve never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there’s a better way to run the company.” It is unconventional to say the least, that at 46 they both decided to step down from actively running the company. The signs were there as they withdrew from critical activities like earning calls and weekly all hands meetings. It is also important as they entrust their life’s work to Sundar Pichai whom they obviously regard highly and trust. This is what they had to say about Pichai – “ Sundar brings humility and a deep passion for technology to our users, partners and our employees every day. He shares our confidence in … the ability … to tackle big challenges through technology. There is no one that we have relied on more since Alphabet was founded, and no better person to lead Google and Alphabet into the future.”
