I have been a fan of Guy Raz and How I Built this from NPR. I look forward to its episodes and have heard some truly fascinating stories of grit, determinations and growth. This is where I heard the Whole Foods Story from John Mackey ( remember the multibillion dollar Amazon acquisition?), of Jerry Murrell of Five Guys and a Burger, Melanie Perkins of Canva and today James Dyson and his vacuum cleaner story.
It is fascinating to know that James Dyson is worth $5.4B and behind a bunch of wildly popular products (the bladeless fan for one) has some strong views on Venture funding. No wonder he never raised any. He owns his companies entirely. Lessons learnt? Understanding the importance of owning the majority if not all the shares of your company, charging customers enough, (not) running a company that doesn’t make money are all critical lessons. “You create your own luck, In a race when you are tired, so are the others and that’s when you accelerate, in technology when you feel like giving up, that is when others will give up..that’s when you put extra effort…when you do that, and success is literally just round the corner.
Take a listen – wonderful way to start the week.
